Something made
from the river.

Yelizwi Mdunjana is a fashion design graduate from Walter Sisulu University and the founder of Yelizwi. Born in the Eastern Cape, she builds looks that speak through clothing, colour and culture — a movement, she writes, not only a name.

Country Allure, shown at Hollywoodbets Durban July 2026 on model Avumile Majola, grew from eMamphondweni. Yelizwi's grandmother wove traditional mats from wetland reeds. The look treats that countryside knowledge as couture: a reed-woven bodice, a skirt marked like basketwork, mud on a hem read as a job well done.

Her wider practice moves between eveningwear, traditional wear and ready-to-wear, with hands-on work across concept, pattern, construction and styling. She has shown at Durban Fashion Fair and Durban July, and holds an NYDA business management certificate.

Give people a voice through clothes.

Yelizwi's philosophy is that fashion should not simply follow trends. It should let people wear their personality, celebrate identity and make a statement — bold, expressive, feminine, and African-inspired.

Not just a name. A movement.

To build Yelizwi into a recognised fashion house that celebrates creativity, culture, confidence, individuality and contemporary African fashion.

What the label
stands for.

01

Heritage as material

Reed, weave and countryside labour are not costume. They are the construction of the garment.

02

Voice

Each design is meant as a statement — so the wearer can stand out and remain unapologetically themselves.

03

Craft

Garment construction, pattern making and styling sit together, from concept through to the finished look.
